Beerakaya thokku pachadi ~ Pickle with peeled skin of Bottle Gourd

Beerakaya or bottle gourd or Egg plant thokku pachadi is made of the peeled skin of the beerakaya and is one of the tastiest and yummy dishes. Many families do not prepare Beerakaya/Bottle Gourd  pachadi but if they try this once they will never miss the opportunity of making it.  

The skin is full of fiber and so very good for health. Hence beerakaya pahadi is one of the nutritious dishes. Lets move on to learn how to prepare this delicious pachadi.


  • 2 Beerakaya/bottle gourd
  • 4-5 Green chillies
  • 2-3 Red Chillies
  • Chana/Gram dal
  • Urad dal
  • Coriander seeds
  • sesame seeds
  • Pinch of tamarind
  • Oil

For popu/tadka/seasoning:

  • Coriander Leaves
  • mustard seeds
  • 2-3 Red Chillies
  • Chana/Gram dal
  • Urad dal
  • Jeera seeds
  • Ghee or Oil


  • Peel of the skin of the Beerakayaly/bottle gourds and wash up the pealed skin. You can prepare another dish with the peeled beerakaya.

  • In a pan heat oil and once it is hot, add the red chillies, chana dal, urad dal, coriander seeds and sesame seeds.
  • After they turn slight brownish colour, remove them into a blender. Add another 2 tbsp of oil to the pan.
  • Add Green chillies and tarmaring when they are cooked, add the washed skin of the bottle gourd.
  • Stir for 5-6 mins with medium heat and let it cool.
  • Blend the above dals into a coarse pwd and then add the peeled skin to blend along with them.

If you want you can add some water but do not add too much.

  • Now heat ghee in a pan for seasoning.

  • Once it is hot add coriander leaves, mustard seads and the rest of the ingrediants.
  • Add them on top of the blended paste.
  • Yummy beerakaya/bottle gourd thokku pachadi is ready.

Serving Tips:

It goes well with roti as well as with rice.
