Prawn Biryani ~ Shrimp Biryani

If you want to impress your guests with unique delicious Indian dishes then here is one recipe ready for you. The procedure is little bit lengthy but the preparation is simple. 

In this post I am going to show the Prawn biryani that gives an unique and nice taste which I never tasted before. It is slightly different from the traditional style of making biryani but I can guarantee the great taste. 

This dish can be prepared over the stove and also in the Oven. I will present both the methods and you can follow which ever is convenient to you.


  • Cleaned Prawn/Shrimp
  • Onion
  • Green Chillies
  • Curd
  • Saffron or Biryani Colour
  • Coriander Leaves
  • Mint ~ Pudina leaves
  • Basmati Rice – lets suppose 2 cups
  • Oil

For Marination:

  • Ginger garlic paste
  • Coriander pwd
  • Cumin pwd
  • Chillie pwd
  • Salt

Masala Ingrediants:

  • Bay Leaves ~ Biryani Aaku
  • Cloves ~ lavangam
  • Cinnaman ~ Dalchina Chekka
  • Mace ~ Japatri
  • Nutmeg ~ Jajikaya

Preparation Procedure:

  • Marinate the shrimp for 30 mins with all the ingrediants under “For Marination”.
  • Wash and soak the Biryani rice for about 30 mins.
  • After 30 mins, heat oil in a pan and fry the shrimp for 3-4 mins. Rememember to stir in between.

Do not add all the shrimp at once. Add few and once they are fried, take them off and add some more. Continue the procedure till all the shrimp is fried.

  • In the same pan add little bit oil and add the curry leaves.
  • Now add all the Masala Ingrediants and stir for a while.
  • Now fry the chopped onions and green chillies
  • Once they become soft add little bit salt and red chillie pwd.
  • Keep the flame low and add softened curd.
  • Stir for a minute and remove the pan from the stove.

Rice Preparation…….

  • Now take 5 cups of water and boil in a vessel.
  • While the water boils, add all the masala ingrediants(fewer quantity) and also add salt.
  • Add the soaked rice and keep the lid.
  • Once the rice is cooked, remove immediately and drain the excess water.

Final Preparation……..

  • Take a deep vessal or Aluminium container(to cook in the oven) and coat the bottom with Oil. Place the Curd+Onion paste at the bottom.
  • On its above place the fried Shrimp.
  • Then sprinkle the coriander leaves and pudina leaves
  • Now place the Rice
  • Add the saffron or biryani colour on top of it

To prepare on Stove:

  • Keep the vessel on the stove with medium flame and close it with a tight lid.
  • After 10 mins, keep the flame in low and let it be there for another 10 mins.

For Oven:

  • Close the Aluminium container with the foil and place it in the Oven.
  • Set the oven temparature to 400-450 F and let it remain there for 20 mins
  • If you want you can remove and check in between.

After the spesified time, remove the vessels and stir all the ingrediants uniformly.

Mouth watering Prawn biryani is ready to serve your guests with.
